DJI Dock 4 batteries: how many you need, swapping and power cuts

How Dock 4 swaps and charges Matrice 5TD batteries, how many to order, and what happens if the power goes off.

How many batteries do I need?

Four for a full set. The dock has four battery compartments, but no more than three can hold a battery at once, because one has to stay free for the battery coming out of the aircraft. Add the one in the aircraft and that's four.

Batteries aren't included with the Matrice 5TD, so make sure they're on your order.

How does the battery swap work?

If the aircraft comes back with less than 79% charge, the dock swaps the battery automatically. The swap takes under 25 seconds from the moment the lid is fully closed, and the aircraft can be back in the air less than 45 seconds after it landed. Those are DJI's lab figures.

You can also start a swap yourself. In DJI FlightHub 2, go to Device Maintenance > Remote Debugging > Dock Control. On site, connect a phone to the dock, open the DJI Enterprise app and go to Debug > Battery Swap > Manual Swap, then pick the battery slot.

How long does a battery take to charge?

About 27 minutes from 15% to 95% at 25°C. The dock charges two batteries at a time.

What happens in a power cut?

The dock switches to backup power from the batteries in its compartments. Each one gives roughly 4.5 hours, and the dock works through them in turn. With mains power on, one battery is enough to keep operating. Without mains power you need at least two, and at least one has to be above 10%.

Backup power keeps the dock running, but it can't charge the aircraft, run the air conditioning or heat the wind gauge. The O4 Ground Station has its own backup battery that lasts about 45 minutes.

How do I turn backup power on or off?

Use the multifunction button in the dock's power cabinet: a short press, then press and hold. To switch the dock off completely, turn off the AC power switch and, if there are any batteries in the compartments, disable backup power the same way. If there are no batteries installed, the AC switch is all you need.

How long do the batteries last?

DJI rates them for 400 cycles, as long as each battery spends no more than 100 days in total above 35°C in any 12-month period. Each one is 260 Wh (12,138 mAh) and weighs 925 g. They charge between 10°C and 55°C and heat themselves in cold weather.

How should I store and transport spare batteries?

Keep them at around 25°C, out of direct sun and away from extreme cold, and check their charge every six months. When you move them, put each one in its own flame-retardant or explosion-proof container and secure it so it can't shift.

At 260 Wh, these batteries are well over the 100 Wh threshold, so they ship as fully regulated dangerous goods. They're also over the 160 Wh limit for passenger flights, so you can't take them on a plane.
