Guide to GVC Certification, PDRA01 Application, and Compliance
Overview of the GVC Certification Process
The General Visual Line of Sight Certificate (GVC) is a key requirement for operating drones under specific authorizations in the UK. The process involves both theoretical and practical components, followed by an application to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for operational authorization.
Steps to Complete GVC Certification
Theory Training and Exam: Access Modules 11 and 12 on Coptrz Academy to prepare for the virtual theory exam. You can study at your own pace and book the exam when ready.
Practical Coaching: After passing the theory exam, book flight coaching sessions to build confidence and prepare for the practical assessment.
Practical Assessment: Schedule and complete the practical flight test. Note that practical test dates can only be confirmed after completing the online theory.
Operations Manual: Ensure your operations manual is updated and approved. While it is not required for the assessments, it must be signed off before your GVC certificate can be issued.
Certificate Issuance: Once all requirements are met, your GVC certificate will be issued within a few working days.
Applying for PDRA01 Operational Authorization
After receiving your GVC certificate, you can apply directly to the CAA for a PDRA01 Operational Authorization. The application fee is £500. While you do not need to submit your operations manual with the application, it must be kept up to date as the CAA may request it during audits.
Maintaining Compliance Under PDRA01
To operate under PDRA01, you must maintain at least two hours of flying experience within the previous three months. If your currency lapses, you must complete two hours of flying to regain compliance.
Accessing and Revising Course Materials
You can revisit earlier GVC course modules for revision even after completing the course. If navigation through the modules is not working, use the “Retake” option to regain access to the full content.
GVC Renewal Process
The GVC renewal course is fully online and self-paced. It includes a theory exam, which is booked through a remote proctoring service. The first attempt is included in the course fee, while re-sits cost £97 + VAT. Flight assessments are also required, with re-sits costing £174 + VAT. You must provide evidence of at least two hours of flying in the last 90 days and submit the necessary documentation.
